Lt Gen A K Singh, GOC-in-C, Southern Command, inaugurated a тАШCardio Pulmonary Rehabilitation CentreтАЩ at the Army Institute of Cardio-Thoracic Sciences (AICTS, Pune). It is the first such facility to be developed in an AFMS hospital which offers a holistic Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Programme for patients with heart and lung diseases.

The programme is medically supervised and individually tailored and consists of endurance-building exercises, meditation, yoga and education to improve the overall quality of life of such individuals. A multidisciplinary holistic healthcare team of physiotherapists, dieticians, yoga teachers, doctors and nurses will help treat these patients with various cardiac and/ or pulmonary disorders who are either recovering after heart or lung surgery/ interventions or have physical limitations due to cardiac or pulmonary disorders.

тАЬPatients with heart and lung diseases tend to carry a psychological burden from their disease even after treatment and need a holistic care programme to get them back to their earlier fitness levels. Such rehabilitation programmes are crucial in their recovery,тАЭ an official statement said.

Singh also visited the state-of-the-art Virtual Reality Lab, again a first-of-its-kind in the country. The lab uses virtual reality technology as a research tool to help in the surgical pre-planning of patients with complex congenital heart disease and simultaneously can be used in medical education.
