Brit tourist, 43, found dead in swimming pool in Bali sparking police investigation – World News

A British tourist has been found dead at the bottom of a swimming pool in Bali triggering a police investigation.

Keen surfer Gavin Andrew is believed to have been swimming in the backyard pool of his rented home in Denpasar City in the popular holiday island on Tuesday (April 20).

A villa worker who went to sweep the courtyard reportedly told police they saw the 43-year-old underwater in the narrow pool and did not disturb him as they thought he was ‘practicing diving’.

Ten minutes later a delivery rider, who arrived to drop off a suitcase, saw Gavin in the pool and realised something was wrong when the tourist failed to return to the surface.

Villa worker Ni Putu Wiwik Widyanuari, 36, called her husband to pull Gavin out of the water with the help of the delivery rider and immediately called the paramedics as he appeared to be unresponsive.

The emergency services tried to revive Gavin without success and he was later declared dead.

South Denpasar Police Station officers arrived to investigate the scene and sent the Brit’s body to the hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Public Relations Police Officer Iptu Ketut Sukadi said they found assorted types of medicine such as painkillers in the tourist’s room upon checking.

He said: “The witness who first saw Gavin thought he was practicing diving so she did not disturb him. It was 10 minutes later, the victim did not come to the surface and made the witness suspicious, so she called her husband.

“There were medicines in his bedroom such as Panadol which was missing six tablets. Other medicines include doses of Sertralin Hexal and Lyrica Pregabalin both of which have already been consumed.

“We did not find any signs of physical assault.”

Police said that Gavin had been staying at the villa since March 18 but workers said he had not complained to them about an illness.

However, Gavin allegedly injured his waist while surfing at a nearby beach when he fell and hit a reef on April 17.

Police are investigating whether an illness caused him to drown while he was swimming.

He was wearing swimming shorts when he was found in pool.

Officer Iptu said that the tourist’s body was sent to the hospital for an autopsy and they were waiting for the result while the embassy contacts his family overseas.

He added: “Gavin had been staying at the villa for more than one month often swam in the pool without any problems.

“The victim is suspected of being sick, but for sure, we are still developing it.

“The man’s body had been taken to Sanglah General Hospital for an autopsy.”

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office has been contacted for comment.
