Brisbane Lions: AFL star Jarryd Lyons new contract, Gold Coast Suns reject

The good news keeps coming in for Brisbane midfielder Jarryd Lyons, making it hard to believe he was once delisted by the Gold Coast Suns.

Two-and-a-half years after he was delisted by cross-town rivals Gold Coast, Brisbane midfielder Jarryd Lyons has signed on for another three years with his new club.

Lyons has been in impeccable touch this season, combining with the likes of Lachie Neale, Mitch Robinson and Hugh McCluggage to form one of the league’s pre-eminent midfields.

Lyons finished second only to Brownlow Medallist Lachie Neale in the club’s best-and-fairest count last year and has carried that form into season 2021.

Averaging 28.1 touches and 5.8 tackles across his 14 appearances this year, Lyons has well and truly staked his claim for All-Australian selection.

“Joining the Lions has been terrific for me,’’ Lyons said in a statement released Monday.

“They are a great bunch of players and a really supportive coaching staff who have created a culture that makes it an absolute pleasure to come to work each day.

“There’s exciting times ahead for this group and I’m thrilled to have committed to the Lions for the next three years.

“I’ve been pretty happy with my form over the past couple of years and I’m looking forward to continuing to work hard on my game and giving the best I can each week for this club.’’

Brisbane’s general manager of football Danny Daly said the club was pleased to be retaining Lyons’ services until at least 2024.

“Jarryd is a very important figure at our club,’’ Daly said.

“From the moment he arrived at the club he showed great leadership and it was no surprise he was voted into the leadership group after his first season.

“He has a really strong footy IQ which allows him to make great contributions in our discussions about footy and also really helps with the development of our younger players.

“And his on-field stuff speaks for itself, his consistency has been incredible; and you know that every week he’ll front up and get the job done.”

Selected by Adelaide with Pick 61 of the 2010 National Draft, Lyons has managed 149 senior appearances across his ten seasons in the top flight.

He is expected to play his 150th AFL game this weekend when the Lions face his former club, the Crows, at Adelaide Oval.

With the race for the top four intensifying, a win would see Brisbane consolidate its spot in third position, and potentially break a game clear of Port Adelaide and Geelong, both of whom also sit on 40 premiership points after 15 rounds.
