Black box of General Rawat’s chopper recovered from crash site | India News

NEW DELHI: Defence officials on Thursday retrieved the ‘Black Box’ of the ill-fated Indian Air Force (IAF) helicopter that crashed near Coonoor in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday afternoon. Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat, his wife Madhulika Rawat and 11 others lost their lives in the incident.
According to official sources, Flight Data Recorder and Cockpit Voice Recorder of the Mi-17V5 chopper have been recovered from the crash site.

“The black box was retrieved in the wake of authorities expanding the search area from 300 metres to one km from the accident spot,” said sources.

The black box would provide crucial data on the chain of events leading to the tragedy on Wednesday when General Rawat, the country’s first CDS, his wife and 11 others were killed after the Mi-17V5 helicopter they were travelling in crashed and went up in flames.
Group Captain Varun Singh, the lone survivor among the 14 on board the Mi-17 V5 chopper, is battling for his life in the military hospital at Wellington in Tamil Nadu.

General Rawat was on his way to the Defence Services Staff College (DSSC), Wellington to address the faculty and student officers of the staff course when the mishap took place in the Katteri-Nanchappanchathram area.
