DARBHANGA: A 30-year-old woman in Bihar’s Darbhanga district gave poison to her three young children before attempting to die by suicide over a loan of 8,000 that she was unable to repay, police said on Monday.

The woman and her three children, two daughters aged 6 and 8, and a 2-year-old son, are being treated at the Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital. They were initially taken to the Biraul community health centre for first aid and were later shifted to the Darbhanga hospital 50km away, said station house officer of Benta police OP Sarwar Alam.

“We have recorded her statement”, he added.

Her family told the police that she had borrowed 8,000 loan but was unable to make the repayments. She was under pressure to return the money and allegedly gave poison to her children before consuming it after her husband, a daily wager, stepped out for work.

Biraul police station chief SN Sarang said an investigation was on. “We have found that she took a loan of 8,000 from a private contact,” he said but stressed that investigators will look at all aspects of the case.

A senior doctor at the Darbhanga hospital said the condition of the three children who were being treated at the paediatric ward was serious.
