Big poll win to boost Vijayan’s hold over party | India News

When ‘Captain Comrade’ Pinarayi Vijayan bucked the 44-year-old revolving-door trend in Kerala to win a decisive second term and improved LDF’s performance from the 2016 assembly polls, the CM consolidated his control over CPM in a manner that few other party leaders can claim to have done. The CPM politburo acknowledged that Kerala voted on the performance of the incumbent government and gave it a second consecutive term.
Vijayan’s resounding victory, despite murmurs of authoritarianism, is expected to change the power dynamics within CPM, weakening the traditional upper hand the Bengal brigade has enjoyed.
The first signs may emerge in the next few months as Kerala gears to host the CPM’s 23rd party congress.
With the Vijayan-led LDF elbowing out UDF, the scales are now, finally, tipped in favour of the new CPM that Vijayan captains.
