US President Joe Biden will meet his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin next month in an effort to de-escalate growing tensions between Washington and Moscow.

The Geneva visit is scheduled for June 16 which comes after the US president’s visit to the United Kingdom for the G7 Summit.

Mr Biden has criticised the Russian president since taking office and labelled the country “the biggest threat” to US security.

His administration also condemned Moscow for the arrest and imprisonment of opposition leader Alexei Navalny.

The meeting will be the first between the nations’ leaders since 2018 when President Putin met former president Donald Trump.
