New Delhi, August 22: The Global NCAP along with the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) have announced the Bharat NCAP crash test programme.
The newly announced Bharat NCAP crash tests will come into effect from October 1, 2023. This is a proud moment for India, as with the introduction of the Bharat NCAP crash test ratings, India has become the fifth country in the world to get its own car crash test rating system. Bharat NCAP Crash Test Rating System Introduced
The announcement of the approval of the Bharat NCAP (BNCAP) has been made official by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, who commented that he is happy to see the domestic automotive industry’s acceptance of the new programme.
With the introduction of the BNCAP, India takes a leap towards car safety, which had only recently improved a great deal post the GNCAP crash tests. Union Minister Gadkari has also mentioned that the cost of testing a car under the new Bharat NCAP programme is around Rs 60 lakh as opposed to around Rs 2.5 crore under the European or Global NCAP system. The cars tested under the BNCAP will bear the Bharat NCAP logo and a sticker denoting the acquired rating. Bharat NCAP – Tests & Rating Details
The Bharat NCAP is similar to the global testing system as per the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, which also mentioned that this programme will increase the Indian automotive industry’s export capabilities.
The Indian crash test programme will also rate a car between 1-5 stars similar to the GNCAP, with 1 star being the lowest. The crash tests will evaluate three parameters – Adult Occupant Protection (AOP), Child Occupant Protection (COP) and Fitment of Safety Assist Technologies.
These evaluations will be taking place in three test processes – frontal impact test, side impact test and side pole impact test, and based on the performance will be offered separate ratings for the different criteria, which are all aligned with the Global NCAP system.
All the cars are mandated to come with pedestrian protection systems, and also in order to achieve a 3 or higher star rating, the cars must come equipped with electronic stability control and front seat belt reminders. The maximum score for the adult occupants is 32 points and for child occupants is 49 points.
