Bengaluru, October 9: How far would someone go to carry out a burglary? In a bizarre twist, a 38-year-old burglar allegedly employed pigeons as his eyes and ears to identify locked houses in Nagarathpete before striking. Operating primarily in multi-storeyed buildings without security, he would release the birds, allowing them to perch on rooftops and signal potential targets. With a stealthy approach, he would break down doors using an iron rod and ransack the premises for valuables. This unusual tactic has led to an investigation into his involvement in approximately 50 house burglaries across the region.
The case first came to light when multiple residents reported a series of burglaries in their neighbourhoods, prompting police to launch an investigation. Suspicion quickly fell on Manjunath, a resident of Hosur, who had been seen in the vicinity of several of the crime scenes. According to a Times of India report, police connected the dots through surveillance footage and witness accounts, leading to his identification as a prime suspect in the ongoing burglary spree. Authorities apprehended Manjunath after gathering sufficient evidence against him. This included recovered stolen items such as 475 grams of gold worth approximately INR 30 lakh, along with a scooter linked to the burglaries. As reported by the Hindustan Times, the police revealed that Manjunath’s method involved using pigeons to scope out targets. After releasing the birds, he would monitor their movements to identify which homes remained unoccupied. Once he found a target, he would calmly ascend the stairs, often using the guise of attempting to catch the pigeons to avoid suspicion. This unique approach raised eyebrows among investigators, making his case even more peculiar. With his arrest, the police believe they have solved four cases registered at the City Market and Ulsoor Gate police stations.
