“Three years ago, the process of change started in J&K which was intended to ensure that full benefits of development and progress that the rest of India had seen for many many years are now completely available also to the people of J&K, especially the youth,” Jaishankar said after inaugurating the first International Education Fair of J&K in Srinagar, a bold initiative to attract foreign students to the state.
“In th at sense, the people of J&K being in the national mainstream was extremely important. By doing so, they would connect with the rest of India and the international mainstream. For m e, it is not just an education event, it is a very integral part of ensuring that a very important region of India is connected to what is happening in the world,” the external affairs minister said.
He also said that Indian universities should make more efforts to attract foreign students. “In a globalised world, it is absolutely essential that young people of India are fully aware of what is happening in the world and there is no better way to do that than having international students among you. ”
The inauguration of J&K’s first International Education Fair, a collaboration between Sher-eKashmir University of Agricultural Science and Technology and Indian Council of Cultural relations, turned out to be a highprofile event, with the government using it to attract foreign students to the UT and get the benefits of the Centre’s policies such as the New Education Policy for the people of J&K.
J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Union ministers Dharmendra Pradhan and Jitendra Singh and ICCR chief Vinay Sahashrabuddhe were also present.
