After nearly five decades as a member of the Congress, former Maharashtra Minister Baba Siddique announced his resignation from the grand old party on Thursday.
A prominent figure in the Mumbai Congress and a Minister during the Congress-Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) coalition’s tenure, Mr. Siddique shared his decision on X, stating, “I resign from the primary membership of the Indian National Congress Party @INCIndia with immediate effect,” expressing gratitude for the 48-year journey in the party which he joined as a teenager.
“There’s a lot I would have liked to express but as they say some things are better left unsaid. I thank everyone who has been a part of this journey,” he said.
This move follows the Election Commission of India recognising the Ajit Pawar faction as the real NCP. Sources said that Mr. Siddique would be joining the NCP soon.
Mr. Siddique’s son Zeeshan Siddique is a Congress MLA from Bandra (East) in Mumbai. Last month, former Union Minister and Mumbai strongman Milind Deora, considered a close friend of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, left the party to join the Chief Minister Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena.
