NSW Health advised today 164 people in the state have reported symptoms after eating the spinach.
At least 42 of those have sought medical attention.
”NSW Health advises the recalled products are not safe to consume and people who have purchased these recalled products should throw them out or return them to the place of purchase for a full refund,” NSW Health said in a statement.
In Victoria, at least 20 people have attended emergency departments with spinach poisoning.
Symptoms of a toxic reaction to the spinach include:
- Delirium or confusion
- Hallucinations
- Dilated pupils
- Rapid heartbeat
- Flushed face
- Blurred vision
- Dry mouth and skin
- Fever
Riviera Farms previously issued a statement confirming any spinach with a best-before date up to and including December 28, 2022, has been recalled.
”We have been working proactively and transparently with our customers and regulators. Riviera Farms can confirm that on Thursday and Friday we contacted all 20 of our baby spinach customers via phone, in writing, or both,” the company said.
Impacted products include:
- Riviera Farms Baby Spinach.
- Fresh Salad Co Fresh and Fast Stir Fry.
- Chicken Cobb Salad and Chickpea Falafel Salad at Woolworths.
- At Coles, Spinach, Chef Blend Tender Leaf, Baby Leaf Blend, Kitchen Green Goddess Salad, Kitchen Chicken BLT Salad Bowl, Kitchen Roast Pumpkin, Fetta and Walnut Salad, Kitchen Smokey Mexican Salad, Kitchen Egg and Spinach Pots.
In other states, Queensland has had at least 26 calls to the poisons information centre and one child was admitted to hospital after consuming the spinach.
ACT Health is investigating several potential cases of food-related toxic reactions.
Queensland, NSW, Victoria and the ACT have urged residents not to eat the contaminated spinach and throw it out immediately.
