At least 35 people were unaccounted for in Haywood County, North Carolina, after intense flooding brought on by Tropical Storm Fred, swept through the region. According to Haywood County Emergency Services “ground, aerial, and swift water rescue teams were sent to areas hardest hit to begin the process of searching and securing”. This footage filmed by Meg Yarbrough on August 17, shows the aftermath of the floods, with mud and debris strewn across damaged roads. Haywood County local government said there was “significant damage to roads and bridges” with at least “10-15 bridges damaged or destroyed.” North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper issued a state of emergency for parts of Western North Carolina, on August 18, saying, “this state of emergency will allow our first responders to get into our affected communities quickly to save lives, restore power, remove debris and bring supplies”.
