Overcast conditions on Wednesday suited Australia’s bowlers but its response with the bat was delayed several hours as rain fell on the Gabba deck, with play eventually abandoned due to bad light.
With La Nina expected to wreak havoc on the east coast over summer, Australia will be hoping the rain can hold off long enough in Brisbane so it can make the most of its blistering start and win the Test.
A south east Queensland town recorded two week’s rain in just one hour on Wednesday afternoon as wild storms smashed the state.
The coming few days could be stormy in Brisbane with further showers to round off the week.

The weather forecast for Brisbane suggests a high a chance of showers and thunderstorm are likely for Thursday, which would further delay Australia from getting its batting innings underway on Day 2.
Lighter showers are predicted for Friday (Day 3) and Sunday (Day 5) but with a bit of luck nearly a full day’s play should be possible on those days.
The best Brisbane weather is forecast for Saturday (Day 4), which is set to be a sunny 32 degrees and the pick of the days for batting.
Wet weather has hampered England’s preparation since arriving in Australia, which hasn’t been a happy hunting ground for the old enemy. The Poms haven’t tasted victory at the Gabba since 1986 and have won just a single series Down Under in the last 35 years.
