“This afternoon I had a routine PCR test which has returned a positive result for COVID-19,” Albanese said.
“I will be isolating and will continue to work from home.
“I encourage anyone who is unwell to test and to take any extra precautions to keep their families and neighbours well.”
It’s the second time this year Albanese has been struck down by the virus.
It’s not known how many people have come in close contact with Albanese since he became infected.
He left Canberra on Friday after the final sitting week of Parliament for the year.
At the weekend he hosted Finland Prime Minister Sanna Marin at Kirribilli House in Sydney.
On Friday he attended a busy event at former Labor prime minister Gough Whitlam’s family home in Cabramatta as it opened to the public after the Commonwealth Government provided $1.3 million to purchase and restore the house as a national heritage building
