Ahmedabad ‘Digital Arrest’ Scam: Woman Extorted INR 5 Lakh, Forced to Undress on Webcam by Fraudsters Posing as Cybercrime Officers

Ahmedabad, October 18: A 27-year-old woman from Naranpura has reported a distressing incident to the police, claiming that unidentified individuals posing as central agency officers extorted 5 lakh rupees from her. The scammers threatened her with legal action under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and allegedly coerced her into undressing in front of a webcam during a so-called “digital arrest.”

According to a report by Times Of India, Hemali Pandya, a resident of Samarpan Tower on 132 Feet Ring Road, received a call on October 13 from someone claiming to be an employee of a courier company, as per the FIR.  The caller alerted her that a package addressed to Thailand in her name contained three laptops, two mobile phones, 150 grams of mephedrone, and 1.5 kilograms of clothing. He then urged Pandya to reach out to the cybercrime unit without delay. Ahmedabad: Police Dog Helps Recover INR 1.07 Crore Stolen From Farmer’s House in Gujarat; 2 Accused Arrested.

After contacting the cybercrime helpline, Pandya received a WhatsApp call from someone claiming to be a Delhi Cybercrime officer, stating her name was involved in a narcotics investigation. He urged her to join a video conference and sent allegedly forged letters from the CBI, labelling her as a suspect in narcotics smuggling and money laundering. Fearing for her safety, Pandya participated in the call, where a man impersonating a CBI officer pressured her to undress and reveal her birthmarks. Despite initially resisting, she complied after threats of imprisonment. In her FIR, she noted a woman officer’s presence during the incident and stated she was forced to transfer nearly 4.92 lakh rupees to accounts provided by the fraudsters. Jewellery Theft Caught on Camera in Ahmedabad: Masked Woman and Accomplice Steal 28 Kilos of Silver From Jewelry Shop, CCTV Footage Surfaces.

When she shared her experience with a neighbour, the neighbour contacted one of the suspects, who admitted, “This woman was a victim of cyber fraud, so please look after her.” After this, the fraudster ended the call, and all the phone numbers he used were turned off. The Naranpura police have filed charges against the unknown suspects under several sections of the law for creating fake documents, forgery, cheating, extortion, impersonating a public servant, and criminal conspiracy.
