‘It’s just horrible that we could be in this situation’ amid Kabul falling in ‘three days’

6PR’s Oliver Peterson says there are concerns whether it was worth Australia committing 39,000 troops and sadly losing 41 of them in the attempt to “rebuild democracy” in Afghanistan – only for the “house of cards” to fall so quickly.

“It’s just horrible that we could be in this situation where late last week I think US intelligence indicated it’d be about 90 days before the Taliban was able to seize control of Kabul and it happened in just three days,” he told Sky News host Peter Gleeson.

“We all thought we were going into Afghanistan first and foremost to find Bin Laden and to destroy Al-Qaeda bases, returning I think in 2005 to help rebuild democracy – that was meant to be what we were doing.

“Now 39,000 troops through Afghanistan, 41 sadly losing their lives and many people on my talkback lines today on 6PR just wondering why we did it – was it all worth it that the house of cards could fall so quickly in Afghanistan.”
