Gender equity advocate Virginia Haussegger spoke to Sky News Australia in June about the treatment of women under Taliban rule, saying they suffered more than any other women “on the face of the planet”.
This comes as the Taliban recaptured Afghanistan including its capital Kabul following the withdrawal of allied troops,
“The women of Afghanistan during the Taliban rule suffered more than any other women on the face of the planet,” Ms Haussegger told Sky News Australia earlier this year.
“Up until 2001 and the US moving in, women had been banned from being in public. They’d been banned from school, they’d been banned from showing their face.
“So of course when we talk about was reconstruction, nation-building the right thing to do… it was necessary to bring women into the real world.
“A huge amount of money went into Afghanistan in terms of aid and development.
“Australia itself invested around $1.5 billion. Australia has been incredibly generous in particular programs for women.”
