“We have been laying stress on the execution of the pending NBWs against anti-socials. Action against them ahead of elections is aimed at preventing disturbance of law-and-order situations,” DGP Sarangi said.
The commissionerate police said they have uploaded on their website names of 2,934 anti-socials of Bhubaneswar against whom NBWs have been pending since long. Most of them are wanted in cases related to murder, attempt to murder, dacoity and hooliganism, among others. At least 1185 NBWs are pending action in Cuttack.
“We have uploaded the list of NBWs by sharing reference of the concerned police stations, case background, sections of law and address of the criminals. We seek the cooperation of the public to inform the concerned police stations about the criminals,” commissioner of police Sanjeeb Panda said.
DGP Sarangi said the visibility of the police on roads across the state has increased following enforcement activities and night nakas in the run-up to the elections. The top cop said a strict vigil is being maintained at inter-state borders. At least 118 police check posts have been set up along the Odisha borders sharing boundaries with Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal.
“The night road blocking has been stepped up to prevent transport of unaccounted cash, illicit liquor, firearms, ganja and brown sugar. Vehicles entering from neighbouring states are being properly frisked,” Sarangi said.
Sarangi has asked SPs in the bordering districts to crack down on hardened criminals and potential trouble mongers in their areas to ensure a violence-free poll. He also asked SPs to prepare themselves by studying electoral offences in 2014 and 2019.
“SPs have made vulnerability mapping of polling booths and identification of critical polling stations based on the past incidents of electoral violence, political rivalries and booth capturing (if any). They have been asked to prepare a database of those who were involved in electoral offences during the 2014 and 2019 general elections and keep tabs on their activities,” another senior police officer said.
