DELHI: The Delhi Police has arrested Riyaz Ahmad Rather, a retired army personnel and alleged member of the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) module operating in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara district, the officials said on Tuesday. The Police also revealed that the accused played a pivotal role in facilitating the transportation of arms and ammunition from across the Line of Control (LoC).
Rather, a resident of Kupwara, was apprehended on Sunday at the New Delhi Railway Station.According to senior police officers, he, along with accomplices Khursheed Ahmad Rather and Ghulam Sarwar Rather, had conspired to receive arms and ammunition from terrorist handlers across the LoC.
The arrest came following information received from investigating agencies in Jammu and Kashmir that Riyaz Ahmad Rather was wanted in connection with a recent terror module case. In that case, five individuals were arrested, and incriminating materials, including five AK rifles (short), five AK magazines, and 16 short AK rounds, were seized.
The arms and ammunition were reportedly sent by LeT terrorist handlers Manzoor Ahmad Sheikh alias Shakoor and Qazi Mohammad Khushal, both based in Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir (PoK) and operating from across the border.
The Delhi Police, acting on the tip-off, formed a team and deployed personnel at the New Delhi Railway Station. Riyaz was identified and apprehended when attempting to flee from exit gate number-1 during the early hours.
Investigations revealed that Riyaz, along with his friend Altaf, had traveled from Jabalpur on the Mahakaushal Express, reaching Hazarat Nizamuddin railway station around 3 pm on Saturday before heading to the New Delhi Railway Station. Riyaz was allegedly planning to reach another hideout.
Both Riyaz and Altaf retired from the Indian Army on January 31, 2023, and police recovered one mobile phone and one SIM card from Riyaz’s possession. The authorities have informed Jammu and Kashmir Police officials for further necessary action.
Riyaz has been arrested under appropriate sections of the law, marking a significant breakthrough in efforts to dismantle terror networks and curb the inflow of arms and ammunition into the region.
