Tuesday auctions, like the one scheduled for 23 Crofton St, Geelong West, on July 27, work well in that they have less competition and more bidders, data shows.

Friday evenings could be the most lucrative time to put a home under the hammer in Melbourne, new data shows.

Limited midweek listings competition could also earn vendors extra coin by generating more competition for the keys.

Ray WhiteтАЩs national clearance rates for the 12 months to July 13 analysed by the groupтАЩs chief economist Nerida Conisbee showed traditionally popular auction times of between 10am and 1pm on Saturdays werenтАЩt always the most successful.

No. 15 Michelle Court, Lara, is scheduled to go under the hammer at 5pm on Tuesday, July 27.

Higher clearance rates and bigger buyer groups could be unleashed by picking a date and time more left of centre, and she said this had the potential to pay dividends to sellers.

тАЬHolding an auction at a time that is less standard can work to your advantage if selling; there is simply less competition from other properties going to auction at these times,тАЭ Ms Conisbee said.

тАЬThe reason auctions work well is that it does create competition, and so the more buyers at a property, you would think the better the price.тАЭ

No. 17 Melissa Drive, Lara, will go to auction on July 20 at 5pm.

Melbourne auctions scheduled for Fridays at 7pm attracted the biggest active bidder numbers, with four buyers typically battling it out for each property.

Most auctions across the country тАФ 1492 out of a total 23,100 analysed тАФ were typically scheduled for 11am on a Saturday.

But the figures revealed more bidders on average threw their hat into the ring at auctions held at 5pm on Tuesdays, with 5.9 active bidders recorded on average at these sales compared to 3.2 bidders at 11am on Saturdays.

The auction for 2/30 Pin Oak Crescent, Flemington, is also scheduled for today at 5pm.

Ray White Lara principal Jo Boothroyd said her agency scheduled the bulk of their auctions for Tuesdays because they felt the property was тАЬfreshтАЭ in buyersтАЩ minds after weekend opens.

тАЬIt also puts our properties ahead of some other homes that may be going to auction later in the week,тАЭ Ms Boothroyd said.

тАЬWe find that Tuesday is very convenient for most people too as they usually donтАЩt have other commitments. Once you get later in the week, other things start to get in the way and attendance can begin to slip.тАЭ

The agency has 17 Melissa Drive, Lara, going to auction today at 5pm, and 15 Michelle Court, Lara, and 23 Crofton St, Geelong West, scheduled for Tuesday next week.

Ray White chief economist Nerida Conisbee said less auctions midweek meant buyers had less properties to choose from and drove more competition for homes.

National clearance rates were highest for Ray White auctions held at 1pm on Fridays, with 91.2 per cent of properties sold.

This was closely followed by 8am Saturday, which had the second highest clearance rate at 90.5 per cent.

SydneyтАЩs best auction time was 11am on Sundays, with an average 4.3 active bidders participating in those sales, according to the data.

BrisbaneтАЩs best time was Monday at 6pm, with 4.9 bidders on average, AdelaideтАЩs was Friday 7pm, with 4.9 average bidders, and PerthтАЩs; noon on Saturday, with 2.5 bidders.
