The federal government has granted $67.7 million funding into Australia’s National Archives but they’re facing a further push for more money to protect the National Bookkeeping which is at risk.

“The $67 million was basically emergency funding with an eye on irreplaceable records that were actually in the process of disintegrating and were…sort of imminently on the brink of destruction,” The Australian’s Gideon Haigh told Sky News.

Mr Haigh explained how the National Archive preserves important pieces of Australian history and “they are fundamental to good government record-keeping”.

“It’s fundamental to accountability and good democracy that archives be properly looked after.”
