Opposition parties preparing to hold their first meeting in Patna this month are working through back-channel communications to reach a consensus on jointly fighting BJP in the 2024 LS polls.
Well placed sources said of the total 543 LS seats, at least 450 seats will have to be fought one-on-one to ensure that anti-BJP votes do not split. How that formula works out is the contentious part that is yet to be finalised and likely to be taken up during the meet in Patna.a
The one-on-one formula means regional parties that are strong in their respective domains will take on BJP while Congress will fight the party in states where both are the main contenders. Congress’s seriousness in ensuring opposition unity is evident from the fact that party chief Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi are tipped to attend the Patna meeting.
