Karnataka DG&IGP Praveen Sood appointed as CBI director: All you need to know | India News

NEW DELHI: Karnataka’s Director General of Police (DGP) Praveen Sood has been appointed as the director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a period of two years. Due to superannuate on May 31, 2024, Sood will get a fixed term until May 2025. The tenure can be extended up to five years.

The 1986-batch IPS officer was the senior-most of three bureaucrats shortlisted by a committee comprising the Prime Minister, Chief Justice of India and the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha. The panel had met on May 13 and sent the shortlisted names to the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet which made the final selection.
“Approval of the competent authority is hereby conveyed to the appointment of Praveen Sood, IPS (KN:86) as Director, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a period of two years from the date of assumption of charge of the office vice Subodh Kumar Jaiswal, IPS (MH:85) consequent upon completion of his tenure,” read the official order issued by the department of personnel and training.
Current CBI director Subodh Kumar Jaiswal’s fixed tenure of two years is coming to an end on May 25.

  • Praveen Sood was born in 1964 and graduated from IIT Delhi.
  • He joined the IPS in 1986 and started his career as Assistant Superintendent of Police, Mysore, in 1989.
  • In 1999, he proceeded to foreign deputation as Police Advisor to Government of Mauritius for 3 years.
  • He was posted as Commissioner of Police of Mysore city from 2004 to 2007.
  • Sood received the Chief Minister’s Gold Medal for excellence in service in 1996, Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 2002 & President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 2011.
  • As Commissioner of Police, Bengaluru city, Sood launched ‘Namma 100’. He was also instrumental in launching ‘Suraksha’ App and ‘Pink Hoyasala’ managed by all-women cops especially for women and children in distress.
  • He has also served as Director General of Police, CID, Economic offences & Special Units.
