‘Eknath Shinde government should resign on moral grounds’: Former Maharashtra CM Prithviraj Chavan on SC verdict

Former Maharashtra chief minister and senior Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan on Thursday demanded the resignation of the Eknath Shinde government on moral grounds, saying that the Supreme Court verdict on the tussle between the two Shiv Sena factions indicates that the Shiv Sena-BJP government in the state was formed illegally.

“The Supreme Court strictures are very serious so the Shinde-led government should resign on moral grounds,” he said.

Chavan, a Congress legislator from Karad in Satara district, said the Supreme Court strictures against the governor and Speaker of the state Legislative Assembly are a clear indication that the new government came to power illegally.

“The Supreme Court has remarked that the Shinde faction cannot stake a claim on a political party and the appointment of Bharat Gogawale as party whip was illegal,” he said.

After Uddhav Thackeray resigned as the chief minister last year, Chavan had said that it was wrong for him to resign and that he should have undergone a floor test first. “The resignation of Thackeray was wrong from the legal aspect but he had resigned on moral grounds then,” he said.

Chavan claimed that the way the Shinde government came to power made it clear that the government was illegal and unconstitutional and would be legally challenged.

“It is my demand that serious strictures have been passed by the court on those sitting in constitutional posts. This is a very serious issue and to avoid any further legal battle, the Shinde government should resign and a new government should come into power in the state,” Chavan added.
