Accused escapes from police custody at PuneтАЩs Sassoon Hospital in second incident in 15 days

In the second such incident in 15 days, an accused arrested in connection with a theft case escaped from the Pune policeтАЩs custody while he was taken to the Sassoon Hospital for treatment Saturday.

The police have identified the accused as Virendra Singh Thakur, 40, a resident of Dahisar in Mumbai. Constable Prashant Tangadkar of Pune Rural police lodged the First Information Report (FIR) against Thakur at the Bundgarden police station.

According to the police, Thakur was recently arrested in a theft case lodged at the Alephata Police Station under the Pune Rural police under sections 457, 380, 511, and 323 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

He was reportedly unwell and admitted to Ward Number 9 of the Sassoon Hospital for treatment. Constable Tangadkar was on duty with him. Around 11.15 am, when Tangadkar went to complete the documentation regarding medical treatment being provided to Thakur, the accused fled from the spot.

A fresh offence was lodged against Tangadkar under IPC section 224. The police have launched a search for the accused.

In a similar incident on April 22, an accused Balu alias Chakradhar Godse, 30, who was arrested by the Ahmednagar police in connection with illegal possession and sale of country-made pistols, had escaped from their custody when he was admitted to the Sassoon Hospital for treatment.

Constable Prakash Mandge of Ahmednagar police had then lodged the FIR against Godse at the Bundgarden police station.
