NDRF, Department of Atomic Energy hold training on radiation safety

The Pune-based 5th Battalion of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), in collaboration with the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), held a two-day training programme for NDRF personnel on radiation safety, radiation emergency preparedness and response in view of upcoming G-20 events in the country.

The programme at the Sudumbare headquarters of the 5 NDRF near Talegaon in Pune on Thursday and Friday (April 13, 14) was attended by rescuers and officers from the 5 NDRF, 6 NDRF from Vadodara, 7 NDRF from Bhatinda and 13 NDRF from Ludhiana.

The programme mainly included training modules on radiation fundamentals, detection and measurement, radiological safety aspects, radioactive contamination and decontamination, radiological dispersal devices, radiological exposure devices, improvised nuclear devices, identification of suspected material, preparedness and the DAE network.

Saras Seth, member secretary, Crisis Management Group (CMG), DAE, inaugurated the programme. Field experts, including RKB Yadav, Dr Shashank Saindane, Aniruddha Chandra, and Teja Ram Meena, conducted the training sessions.

Tabletop exercises and mock drills on various radiological emergencies were also conducted. AK Nayak, chairman, CMG DAE, who was the chief guest for the closing ceremony, apprised everyone of the importance of nuclear energy. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Santosh Bahadur Singh, commandant, 5th NDRF.
