NEW DELHI: The government on Monday slapped a fresh notice on Indian Women Press Corps asking it to pay around Rs 18.9 lakh for unauthorised occupation of the 5, Windsor Place bungalow in Lutyen’s Delhi from August 2022. It has also asked the IWPC to vacate the bungalow “at the earliest”, else eviction proceedings will be initiated.
A senior office bearer said IWPC received the notice late evening. “We just got the letter and we will discuss the issue raised by the government. We will respond to them after deliberations,” the office bearer said. Interestingly, the fresh notice came barely five days before the election of IWPC office bearers was scheduled to be held. Insiders said this will now become a major issue in the polls.
This is the third time in the past one year when the Directorate of Estates (DoE) under the housing and urban affairs ministry has issued notices to the IWPC for unauthorised occupation of the bungalow after expiry of allotment. The DoE, in its notice issued on Monday said, Rs 18.88 lakh is payable as damages for unauthorised occupation of the bungalow from August 1 2022 to April 10, 2023. “It is requested to pay the damages and vacate the house at the earliest, failing with eviction proceedings shall be initiated against you under the Public Premises (Eviction of unauthorised occupants) Act,” the notice mentioned.
It also mentioned that in the DoE notice dated May 4, 2022 IWPC was asked to find suitable accommodation and arrange to vacate the bungalow before July 2022.
TOI on July 24 had first reported that the ministry was not in favour of extending the allotment of the bungalow.
