BHOPAL: A peon at the Indore collectorate was arrested on Friday on charges of transferring ₹5.67 crore from accounts of beneficiaries under different schemes into accounts of 29 people known to him, a police officer said.
Raoji Nagar police station in-charge Preetam Singh Thakur, who is investigating the case, said the peon, Milap Chauhan, was arrested following a complaint filed by the administration.
Indore collector Ilayaraja T recently received a complaint alleging misappropriation of government funds earmarked for schemes. Thakur said the preliminary inquiry supported allegations that Milap Chauhan and two others had diverted funds.
“As many as 30 accounts including of relatives and Milap Chauhan’s wife were used by him to transfer the money. All the account holders have been made accused in the case. Milap purchased a farmhouse and agricultural land for ₹3.5 crore and for that, he paid directly from the treasury account of the government,” Thakur said.
Milap, and two others, Ranjit Karod and Amit Nimbalkar, have been suspended and an inquiry ordered in the matter.
The collector said a team of finance department will come to Indore to probe the matter.
