SRINAGAR: A local court in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district on Monday rejected the bail plea of a former police driver for his involvement in a ‘fake encounter’ 16 years ago.
Principal Sessions Judge Bandipora Amit Sharma observed that bail cannot be granted to a person who has shaken the basic faith and confidence of the common man in the working of the police organisation. Along with former driver Farooq Ahmad Padroo, former SSP Ganderbal Hans Raj Parihar is accused in the case of killing cloth merchant Ghulam Nabi Wani of Kokernag in a fake encounter.
Padroo is facing trial in this case for murder, abduction, criminal conspiracy, causing disappearance of evidence and wrongful confinement. His counsel had appealed for bail on the grounds that the accused had been facing trial for more than 15 years and there was no chance of the trial being concluded in near future. Because of the long detention, Padroo has allegedly developed various ailments including psychiatric disorder, and isn’t able to communicate and behave properly, said his counsel, adding that Padroo is aged and should get bail as two other accused in the same case.
