The incident took place at Barbarossaplatz in the city of Würzburg in Bavaria, with local media reporting multiple stabbings.

The perpetrator was stopped after being shot in the leg and was taken into custody, BILD reports.

Officers have not confirmed the number of casualties, but said there are “several injuries and also fatalities to mourn”.

There is no longer any danger to the population, police said.
