At least 5 dead in latest hooch tragedy in Bihar

At least five people have died in Siwan district of тАЬdryтАЭ BIhar after allegedly consuming spurious liquor on Sunday, police said.

The latest hooch tragedy took place at Bala village of Maharajganj subdivision in the district.

According to a statement issued by the district administration, 10 people were admitted to the district hospital in Siwan around 7 pm on Sunday after they complained of stomach pain, nausea and dizziness.

тАЬWhile one of them was declared brought dead, four others died on way to Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH),тАЭ additional director general (ADG) of police (headquarters) Jitendra Singh Gangwar said.

However, Nagnarayan Shah (55), a resident of Safiabad village in Baikunthpur block, who told reporters that he too had consumed liquor and felt uneasy with blurred vision, died later while on way to a hospital in Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh, locals said.

District magistrate (DM) Amit Kumar Pandey said autopsy reports were awaited to ascertain the cause of deaths.

Six others who consumed liquor have complained of vision loss, police sources said.

ADG Gangwar said a total of 16 people have been arrested in connection with the latest hooch tragedy.

This is the first hooch incident reported in Bihar in 2023 and second in Siwan in as many months.

On December 16, 2022, eight people had died in Siwan after consuming spurious liquor, just days after another such incident had claimed over 70 lives in Saran district.

Production, sale and consumption of liquor is banned in Bihar since April 2016.
