Iranian man who beheaded 17-year-old wife gets eight years in jail

Sajjad Heydari carried out the so-called “honour killing” of his wife Mona last year.

He reportedly carried her severed head through the streets before he was apprehended.

Mona had fled to Turkey after she was subjected to domestic abuse, but had returned to Iran after her family assured her she would be safe.

Murder is punishable by death in Iran, but local media reported that Mona’s parents had “forgiven” Heydari, which legally rules out a death sentence.

Mona’s brother-in-law was also jailed for complicity in her murder – but only for 45 months.
