MeT issues cold day alert for 19 districts till Jan 6

PATNA: The state continued to witness cold and foggy weather on Wednesday as cold wave conditions were declared at Forbesganj, Sabour and Motihari, said officials of Patna Meteorological Centre.

The maximum temperature in the state dropped four to seven notches below the season’s corresponding normal.

The Patna Meteorological Centre has issued a warning for cold day conditions across 19 districts of north Bihar, including West Champaran, East Champaran, Sitamarhi, Madhubani, Supaul, Araria, Kishanganj, Gopalganj, Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga, Saharsa, Madhepura, Purnia, Siwan, Saran, Vaishali, Samastipur, Punia, and Katihar till January 6.

However, no respite from cold weather is in store as weathermen warned of a further dip in temperature in the next 24 hours.

According to Patna Meteorological Centre, Forbesganj remained the coldest with the lowest minimum temperature of 7°C.

Patna’s maximum temperature stood at 13.4°C which was eight degrees below than season’s corresponding normal. Similarly, the maximum temperature at Bhagalpur and Gaya stood at 15.6°C and 17.9°C respectively, seven and four degrees below than corresponding normal.

The minimum temperature at Siwan stood at 9°C, Saharsa at 9.1°C, Saran at 9.2°C, Motihari, and Sabour at 10°C each, West Champaran at 11°C and Patna at 11.2°C, officials said.

Rajesh Kumar, an official at Patna Meteorological Centre, said, “As per current numerical model and weather analysis, low marked areas has formed over the state while northerly winds are prevailing at the speed of 4 to 6 km per hour. As a result, minimum and maximum temperature is expected to fall by 4°C to 6°C. Foggy weather will continue to prevail in the state.”

As per India Meteorological Department (IMD), a cold day in plains is declared when the minimum temperature falls under 10°C or there is a departure of 4.5°C to 6.4°C in maximum temperature.
