Rajasthan: Five killed, 50 injured in cooking gas cylinder blast in Jodhpur

Five, including two children, were killed and around 50 people injured after a cooking gas cylinder exploded in a house in Jodhpur district of Rajasthan where guests had gathered for a wedding on Thursday. The house collapsed due to the impact of the blast.

Jodhpur divisional commissioner Kailash Chand Meena on Friday said the incident was reported from Bhungra village in Shergarh tehsil, 110 km from Jodhpur.

Meena confirmed that five people, including two children, were killed in the incident, while the injured are undergoing treatment at Mahatma Gandhi hospital in Jodhpur. Around 15 of those injured, all adults, are in a serious condition.

Guests had gathered at the house of bridegroom Surendra Singh and food was being prepared when the cylinder kept in the store room caught fire following a leak.

Chief minister Ashok Gehlot met the injured at the hospital, and assured them of all assistance possible in their treatment. “The situation is worrisome as many injured have suffered 80%-90% burn injuries.”

Gehlot said the state will provide 5 lakh as financial assistance to each family of the deceased under the Chiranjeevi Yojna, 2 lakh from the CM relief fund, and 100,000 compensation to the injured.
