NEW DELHI: Ahead of the winter session, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hoped that the congeniality of discussions at the all-party meet over India assuming G20 presidency would be reflected in Parliament too.
“India is such a large country, is the mother of democracy and has so much diversity and potential. Therefore, this is a big opportunity for the world to know India and for India to show its potential to the whole world,” he stated.
He urged parties to allow smooth functioning of the House so that backbenchers and first-time MPs get a chance to speak. “. . . It is of utmost importance for theHouse to function. I think floor leaders of parties will understand this pain of the MPs. ” The last session was marred by regular disruptions in the Parliament.
Later, while welcoming Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar for assuming charge as chairman of theRajya Sabha, the Prime Minister said he was taking charge at a time when the country witnessed two historical events.
“India has just assumed the presidency of G20 and this is also a time when we have commenced our journey into ‘Amrit Kaal’. Not only will ‘Amrit Kaal’ be a period of development and glory for the country, it will also be an occasion when India will play an important role in giving direction to the world,” said Modi as the House met for the first day of the session.
Prime Minister Modi further remarked that the House is fortunate to receive “Dhankhar’s able and effective leadership” at this juncture.
