Nagpur Shocker: 17 Students Suffer Food Poisoning, Rushed to Hospital After Eating ‘Toffee’ Given by Unknown Person; Police Launch Probe

Nagpur, December 4: Panic ensued after as many as 17 students fell ill after eating toffees distributed by some unidentified person in Sitalbudi on Saturday. The incident took place in Madan Gopal Agrawal High School in Sitabuldi. The kids were immediately rushed to nearby Lata Mangeshkar Hospital after they complained of severe stomach ache and uneasiness.

Doctors have treated and discharged 10 of them while seven were kept under observation for a day, reported TOI.

Police was immediately informed by the school officials after they came to know from children that they got the toffees from an unknown person who was ‘wearing a mask’. Police swung into action and initially took separate statements of children. However, nothing concrete could be found after the initial inquiry. The medics who treated these kids said that at least six of the 17 had not even eaten the toffees but started complaining after watching others which is common nature. They were sent home within hours. Only those who were showing symptoms of infection or poisoning were kept under observation till late Saturday evening.

Teachers said the incident took place outside the school. “As we were not sure about who distributed the toffees and why, our principal called the police control room,” said a teacher who accompanied the kids to the hospital.

The police have booked an unidentified person under section 328 (causing hurt by means of poison, etc. with the intent to commit an offence).
