SHARM EL-SHEIKH: Making a strong pitch for sustainable lifestyle as a tool to combat climate change, India on Tuesday said the world urgently needs a paradigm shift from “mindless and destructive consumption to mindful and deliberate utilisation” of resources, and appealed to every nation to undertake a collective journey to deal with the global problem “with equity and climate justice” as guiding principles.
“We are trustees of this planet earth. We must nurture it through sustainable lifestyles that optimise resource use and minimise waste,” said India’s environment minister Bhupender Yadav while delivering the country’s statement at a high-level segment of the climate talks.
He said, “As the world’s most populous democracy and a vibrant emerging economy, India seeks to lead by example, and invites the global community to be a part of Mission LiFE (lifestyle for environment) for individual, family and community-based actions.” Yadav preferred not to bring any contentious issues while delivering the national statement – be it the issue of climate finance, support for loss and damage or seeking substantial actions from big historical emitters.
