We can’t declare Bose’s birthday as national holiday: SC | India News

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday refused to entertain a PIL seeking a direction to the Union government to declare Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose’s birthday, January 23, as a national holiday saying it is a policy matter falling squarely in the Executive‘s domain.
A bench of Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justice J B Pardiwala chided the petitioner-advocate K K Ramesh for misusing the PIL jurisdiction and said, “You can contribute more for national growth by working hard rather than attempting to increase the number of public holidays. Ramesh had also sought a direction to the government to set up a Netaji’s memorial.
“Can we issue a direction to the Union government to declare such and such days as national holidays? There are so many things which are sentimentally, or otherwise desirable. But, can the judiciary take up such issues? We all want clean environment. Can you file a PIL seeking a direction for a blue sky? We will entertain only those PILs which are judicially manageable,” the bench said.
