NEW DELHI: With voting for the state assembly elections scheduled for December 1 and 5, in two phases, it is expected that voter turnout may be low as it coincides with the wedding season. According to almanagists and wedding pandits, some 35,000 weddings are expected to take place around these voting days i.e. from December 1 to 5. This may, according to almanagists, result in lower voter turnout as people may be occupied or travelling. The wedding season begins on November 22 after which at least 80,000 weddings are slated to be held across Gujarat till the kamurta period begins on December 13.
Rajendra Dave, who compiles almanacs, said, “The dates of December 2, 4 and 8 are among the most auspicious ones. At least 15,000 weddings are expected to be held on each of these days in Gujarat. Since these wedding dates are just after or before voting days of December 1 and 5, people who are travelling may not be able to make it in time to vote.”
This year, as Covid-related restrictions such as night curfew and limits on gatherings have been lifted, the number of weddings to be organised has risen sharply.
“The backlog of the past two years has poured into this November-December wedding season and people who did not organise functions due to the pandemic have now planned them. From December 1-4, most wedding venues across Ahmedabad are fully booked,” said Pintoo Dandwala, director of an event management firm.
The situation is similar in Surat, where at least 200 ceremonies are expected to be held on each muhurat day of December in the city. “All wedding venues in the city are fully booked for December,” said Nirav Desai, chief of South Gujarat Event Management Association.
