The Queen’s eight grandchildren have held a vigil around her coffin as it lies in state at Westminster Hall.
He wore civilian clothes because he is no longer a working member of the royal family. But his father, King Charles III, requested both William and Harry wear their military uniforms at this vigil.
Prince Harry served in Afghanistan as a British army officer.
Prince William stood with his head bowed at the head of the coffin. Prince Harry stood at the foot.
The remaining grandchildren of Queen Elizabeth II – Princesses Beatrice, Princess Eugenie, Zara Tindall, Peter Phillips, Lady Louise Windsor and James, Viscount Severn – wore black attire.
Some of the grandchildren’s parents watched on as the younger members of the royal family payed their respects.
Prince Edward and his wife Sophie, the Earl and Countess of Wessex, stood on a balcony of Westminster Hall and watched their children, Lady Louise Windsor and James, Viscount Severn, in the vigil.
Earlier today, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie issued a joint statement about their “beloved grannie”.
“You were our matriarch, our guide, our loving hand on our backs leading us through this world. You taught us so much and we will cherish those lessons and memories forever,” the royal sisters said.
Overnight, volunteers distributed blankets and cups of tea to people in line as temperatures fell to 6 degrees Celsius. Despite the weather, mourners described the warmth of a shared experience.
“It was cold overnight, but we had wonderful companions, met new friends. The camaraderie was wonderful,” Chris Harman of London said.
“It was worth it. I would do it again and again and again. I would walk to the end of the earth for my queen.”
