Nitish Kumar joins hands with RJD again: How numbers stack up in Bihar assembly

Once seen as a potential rival to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Nitish Kumar, 71, who earlier in the day submitted his resignation as the chief minister heading the NDA coalition, said he submitted a list of 164 MLAs to governor Phagu Chauhan.

Nitish Kumar on Tuesday broke ranks with the BJP-led NDA coalition to stake claim as head of the rival ‘Mahagathbandhan’ (Grand Alliance) to be chief minister of Bihar for the eighth time.

Once seen as a potential rival to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Kumar, 71, who earlier in the day submitted his resignation as the chief minister heading the NDA coalition, said he submitted a list of 164 MLAs to governor Phagu Chauhan. He will take oath as chief minister at 2pm at Raj Bhawan in Patna on Wednesday, said the RJD, his new ally.

The effective strength of the state assembly is 242 and the magic figure is 122.

    At 36.8°C, Chandigarh records hottest August day in 3 years

    City’s maximum temperature rose from 36.3C on Monday to 36.8C on Tuesday, making it the hottest August day since 2019, according to the India Meteorological Department. At 36.8C, the maximum temperature on Tuesday was 4.1 degrees above normal and highest since 37C on August 28, 2019. IMD Chandigarh director Manmohan Singh added that rain was next most likely on Thursday. The minimum temperature also went up from 27.6C on Monday to 28.1C on Tuesday, 4.6 degrees above normal.

    After steady rise for three weeks, Chandigarh tricity’s Covid cases see marginal dip

    Climbing steadily for three straight weeks, tricity’s Covid-19 cases saw a marginal decline in the first week of August. Compared to 901 Covid cases between July 4 and 10, the tricity had logged 1,216 cases between July 11 and 17. The number rose further to 1,797 in the subsequent week and to 2,286 in the last week of July. However, as August began, the cases dipped to 1,933 in the first week.

    Subdued for the past two years amid the Covid-19 pandemic, Independence Day celebrations in Chandigarh this year will for the first time see the participation of the Indian Air Force at the main programme at Parade Ground in Sector 17. IAF helicopters will shower participants at the event with flower petals and a contingent of parachutists will paradrop with the Tricolour during the ceremony. IAF personnel will be paradropped.
