A woman who recently made international headlines for smashing the world record when she gave birth to 10 babies cannot be found.

The South African government has taken to Twitter in a desperate attempt to find the woman, who they haven’t been able to find anywhere.

The director-general of the government’s communications team said they have been trying to find Gosiame Thamara Sithole, who was reported to have given birth to 10 babies on June 7.

The Mirror on Tuesday covered how Gosiame, from Tembisa in the municipality of Erkulheni, gave birth to the seven boys and three girls through C-section and at 29 weeks.

They babies were said to have been naturally conceived, which is a rarity in such cases where so many babies are born out of a single pregnancy.

Gosiame was said to have smashed the world record as she given birth to ten babies on June 7

The 37-year-old was claimed to have won the record for the greatest number of babies delivered from Halima Cisse of Mali, who had nine kids in May.

Gosiame was said to be unaware she was due 10 babies as doctors giving her a scan twice got the number wrong, telling her first she was expecting six and then eight.

The feat, however, has not been confirmed by doctors or the Guinness World Records.

Now the government has appealed on social media for information on the alleged new mum.

Phumla Williams asked the public for help in tracking her down before tagging IOL, the publication who originally broke the story about Gosiame.

“We have spent a better part of today tracing the story of @IOL of a woman having given birth to 10 babies! @IOL can you please help the public where this birth happened!”, Ms Williams tweeted.

Erkulheni mayor Mzwandile Masina echoed the appeal while suggesting the story may have been fabricated.

My office & our Dept. of Social Dev. have been searching for the family who allegedly gave birth to 10 kids today,” he tweeted.

“Apparently they from Tembisa & we wanted to assist as a city.

“Can @IOL provide some info on this story? Or has mainstream media degenerated to a fake news factory?”

Gosiame’s husband Teboho was said to be “happy and emotional” after the birth of his 10 children, who are an addition to the six-year-old twins the couple already have.

“It’s seven boys and three girls. She was seven months and seven days pregnant.

“I am happy. I am emotional. I can’t talk much. Let’s talk again in the morning please,” he was quoted saying.
