Tasmanian Senator Claire Chandler says regulation in some Australian states which allow inmates to go to prison based on their gender identity and not their biological sex needs more transparency to assess how much female prisoners might be at risk.
“It differs from state to state,” she told Sky News host Peta Credlin.
“My understanding is that some jurisdictions do have rules and regulations which allow inmates to go to prison based on their gender identity rather than their biological sex.
“So I think we do need to see some more transparency here and have a bit more understanding of exactly what these numbers are so that we can understand how female prisoners might be at risk in Australia.”
