Low inventories of new vehicles mean even celebrities sometimes have a tough time finding exotic new sets of wheels.
One man who’s made a business out of overcoming obstacles to match the rich and famous with the horsepower of their dreams is the subject of a new series on the Discovery+ streaming network.
“Million Dollar Wheels” follows RD Whittington, a luxury-car broker in Beverly Hills, Calif., as he encounters unrelatable dilemmas such as this question posed to him during an interview with TMZ: If socialite Kim Kardashian and British actor Tom Holland both want the same rare car, who gets to buy it?
“You get Kim one first because she’s here and she’s local,” Whittington answered quickly, “and then you get Tom one second because he’s in England and it will give us some time because we have to ship it there.”
The situation was hypothetical, but Whittington, whose clients include actors Leonardo DiCaprio and Jamie Foxx, said his business has gotten tougher as a result of the coronavirus pandemic and the microchip shortage that has hampered automotive production.
“Supply and demand,” Whittington told TMZ. “There’s less cars being produced. There’s more people wanting cars right now. With COVID, the production numbers have been cut in half, so you have a lot of celebrities — and they can be all A-list — chasing after the same toy.”
The show, which premiered Feb. 28 and will have new episodes weekly, promises to feature “some of the rarest Rolls-Royces, Ferraris, McLarens and Maybachs in the world.” Kardashian posted a clip from the series on social media showing her picking up a $100,000 customized Mercedes-Benz V-Class van from Whittington’s store, WiresOnly.
