The three-hour drama is based on novelist Haruki MurakamiтАЩs short story of the same name in the authorтАЩs 2014 collection, тАЬMen without Women.тАЭ
The other nominees in the non-English film category this year are тАЬCompartment No. 6тАЭ (Germany, Russia, Finland), тАЬThe Hand of GodтАЭ (Italy), тАЬA HeroтАЭ (Iran, France) and тАЬParallel MothersтАЭ (Spain).
Hamaguchi and screenwriter Takamasa Oe won the Best Screenplay Award for тАЬDrive My CarтАЭ at this yearтАЩs Cannes Film Festival. The work also received the New York Film Critics Circle Award for best picture.
Last yearтАЩs best motion winner in the non-English category was тАЬMinari,тАЭ a movie about South Korean immigrants pursuing the American dream in rural Arkansas.
