Two cargo ships have collided in the Baltic Sea with rescuers searching for at least two men thought to be in the water.

The incident took place between the Swedish town of Ystad and the nearby island of Bornholm at around 3.30am on Monday morning.

One of the ships has capsized and is upside down, according to the Swedish Maritime Administration.

Jonas Franzen, communications manager of the Swedish Maritime Administration, said screams have been heard from the water.

At least two people are feared to be in the water, although it is not known how many men were onboard the capsized ship.

One of the vessels involved is reportedly the British-flagged ship Scot Carrier, which was said to be travelling from Salacgrīva, in Latvia, to Montrose in Scotland.

The other ship is said to be the Danish-flagged Karin Hoej, which was travelling between the Swedish city of Södertälje and the city of Nykøbing Falster in Denmark, according to the Swedish national newspaper the Expressen.

At least 10 lifeboats are taking part in rescue efforts to find anyone who is missing, although crews have been hampered by the early morning darkness.
