Speaker of the house Tony Smith has announced he is resigning from his position on November 22.

“As you are aware a new senate president was elected just last Monday, so it’s important for the Parliament that I take the next few weeks to work with him on a whole range of matter that we have joint responsibility for here in the building,” he said.

“I also want to give all members early notice of my decision so they can consider the vacancy.”

Mr Smith said he was resigning because he wanted to finish his career in government as a backbencher, wanted to speak in the house again and focus on his electorate.

“It’s not because I’m tired of the job, I doubt I would ever tire of it, it’s not certainly not because I’m tired of pulling ministers or members into line, I think you know, I would never tire of that, I relish it,” he said.

Mr Smith also said he decision was not due to “some disquiet” he had with the government.

Another speaker will be chosen before Question Time starts on Tuesday, November 23.
