A major earthquake has rocked Greek holiday island Crete.

The 6.5 magnitude quake struck off the coast of the island on Monday, the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said.

The quake had a depth of 1.24 miles and occurred 25 km southeast of island capital city Heraklion, the EMSC said.

Pete Goodwin, who was preparing to fly back to Britain, said on Twitter: “Just experienced a very strong earth tremor/earthquake in Crete!”

Others on Twitter reported having felt tremors as far away as Santorini and Analipsi.

It comes just two weeks after a 4.2 magnitude quake struck near fellow holiday island Kos, in a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicentre on September 11.

Greece is one of the world’s most seismically active countries, meaning earthquakes are common.

However, compared to other more active parts of the world, most Greek earthquakes are relatively mild.
