A surfer has died after being brutally mauled by a shark off the east coast of Australia.

The horror took place at Emerald Beach, around 350 miles north of Sydney, on Sunday – the nation’s Father’s Day.

Many surfers were out to celebrate the holiday, reports say, with several rushing to the victim’s aid when they saw the attack.

Paramedics also raced to the scene but the man – who has not yet been identified – could not be saved.

“Despite the best efforts of bystanders, paramedics and other emergency services the patient sadly died at the scene,” New South Wales Ambulance said on its Twitter account.

The beach, about 12 miles north of Coffs Harbour, was closed after the incident, officials said.

The surfer, said to be aged in his 20s or 30s, is believed to have had his arm bitten off and suffered large lacerations to his back, MailOnline said.

Aaron Armstrong was surfing at the time of the attack and saw the man being brought out of the water.

“It’s quite scary,” he told ABC. “You feel for the dude’s family.”

Resident Glenn Coleman said heard the sirens coming down his street.

“We pricked our ears up straight away and we knew something had happened,” he added.

“It’s a heavy feeling.”

Australia ranked behind only the United States in the number of unprovoked shark encounters with humans in 2019, according to the University of Florida’s International Shark Attack File.

New South Wales is currently in a lockdown due to coronavirus but people can leave their homes for exercise.
